Dhyana Shloka

Original

Transliteration

Om Namo Bhagavate Shri Nrisimhaya. Dhyayen-nrisimham tarunarka-netram sitabhra-gauram dhrita-shankha-chakram. Damstrakaralam nakha-vajra-deham bhaktarti-hantaram-achintya-rupam.

Meaning / Translation

Salutations to Supreme Lord Narasimha. I meditate upon Lord Narasimha, whose eyes radiate like the morning sun, whose brilliance is radiant like white clouds, holding the conch and discus, fierce with sharp fangs and diamond-hard claws, the remover of His devotees' distress, possessing an inconceivable form.

Verse 1

Original

Transliteration

Brahmādayaḥ suragaṇā munayo'tha siddhāḥ sattvaikatāna-matayo vacasāṁ pravāhaiḥ. Nārādhituṁ puru-guṇair adhunāpi pipruḥ kiṁ toṣṭum arhati sa me harir ugra-jāteḥ.

Meaning / Translation

Lord Brahma, all demigods, sages, and liberated beings, whose minds are fully purified in pure goodness, could not fully satisfy the Lord with flows of exalted prayers and glorious qualities. How then can I, born of an asuric lineage, hope to please the Supreme Lord Hari?

Verse 2

Original

Transliteration

Manye dhanābhijana-rūpa-tapaḥ-śrutaujas- tejaḥ-prabhāva-bala-pauruṣa-buddhi-yogāḥ. Nārādhanāya hi bhavanti parasya puṁso bhaktyā tutoṣa bhagavān gaja-yūtha-pāya.

Meaning / Translation

I consider that wealth, noble ancestry, beauty, austerities, scriptural learning, vitality, influence, strength, human endeavor, intellect, and yogic practice are incapable of truly propitiating the Supreme Person. The Supreme Lord was pleased with Gajendra, the king of elephants, purely through his unalloyed devotion.

Verse 3

Original

Transliteration

Viprād dvi-ṣaḍ-guṇa-yutād aravinda-nābha- pādāravinda-vimukhāc chva-pacaṁ variṣṭham. Manye tad-arpita-mano-vacanehitārtha- prāṇaṁ punāti sa kulaṁ na tu bhūri-mānaḥ.

Meaning / Translation

If a brahmana possesses all twelve traditional virtues but turns away from the lotus feet of the lotus-navel Lord, I consider a devotee of lowliest birth to be far superior. For such a devotee has dedicated mind, words, deeds, wealth, and life itself to the Lord, thereby purifying his entire lineage, whereas the proud brahmana cannot purify even himself.

Verse 4

Original

Transliteration

Naivātmanaḥ prabhur ayaṁ nija-lābha-pūrṇo mānaṁ janād aviduṣaḥ karuṇo vṛṇīte. Yad yaj jano bhagavate vidadhīta mānaṁ tac cātmane prati-mukhasya yathā mukha-śrīḥ.

Meaning / Translation

The Supreme Lord is already completely fulfilled in His own transcendental bliss; in His causeless mercy He does not accept honor from ignorant beings for His own sake. Whatever honor a devotee offers to the Lord brings benefit back upon the devotee himself, just as the decoration upon one's real face naturally reflects in the mirror.

Verse 5

Original

Transliteration

Tasmād ahaṁ vigata-viklava īśvarasya sarvātmanā mahi gṛṇāmi yathā-manīṣam. Nīco'pi pāpam apahāya hariṁ prapanno jñānena saṁpluta-tamo vipulīkaroti.

Meaning / Translation

Therefore, casting away all hesitation and unworthiness, I shall sing the glories of the Supreme Lord to the utmost of my ability with all my heart. Even a low-born soul, abandoning sin and taking exclusive refuge in Lord Hari, dispels the blinding darkness of ignorance through pure spiritual light.

Verse 6

Original

Transliteration

Om Ugram Viram Maha-Vishnum Jvalantam Sarvato-Mukham. Nrisimham Bhishanam Bhadram Mrityu-Mrityum Namamy-Aham.

Meaning / Translation

I bow down to the ferocious, heroic Maha-Vishnu, who blazes in all directions with universal faces; Lord Narasimha, the terrifying yet supremely auspicious one, the death of death itself.
