परिचय

Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, is the first day of the five-day Diwali festivities in Hinduism. It is a celebration of wealth, prosperity, and good fortune, associated with Goddess Lakshmi. The term 'Dhanteras' is derived from the Sanskrit words 'dhan' meaning wealth and 'teras' meaning thirteen, as it falls on the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. This day is considered highly auspicious for purchasing precious metals like silver and gold, and for performing rituals to invoke the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.

महत्व

Dhanteras is significant because it marks the beginning of the Diwali celebrations and is believed to bring good luck and prosperity. It is also associated with the story of Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, who is said to have emerged from the ocean of milk on this day, holding a pot of amrita. The day is also dedicated to Yama, the god of death, and is known as Yama Deepam or Yamadeepdaan. People light lamps and offer prayers to Yama to seek his blessings for a long and healthy life.
