- ✗Never step over the somasutra (water outlet) of the Linga.
- ✗Do not blow on the Linga to cool it or clean it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- •Using plastic or synthetic flowers instead of fresh ones.
- •Performing abhishekam with very hot or very cold liquids — use lukewarm/room temperature.
- •Rushing through the ritual without mindfulness.
- •Neglecting to wipe the Linga dry after abhishekam, leading to erosion.
- •Offering bilva leaves upside down — stem should face the worshipper.
- •Chanting mantras incorrectly without learning from a guru.
- •Mixing Shaiva and Vaishnava offerings in the same puja (e.g., offering tulsi to Shiva).
- •Ignoring the sankalpa (intention) — it gives direction to the worship.
Regional Variations
- •In South India, Sphatika (crystal) Lingas are highly prized for home worship; abhishekam is elaborate with many substances.
- •In North India, Banalingas (naturally formed stones from Narmada) are common; worship is simpler with emphasis on milk and bilva.
- •In Kashmir Shaivism, the Linga is worshipped as Spanda (vibration) with intense mantra yoga.
- •In Tamil Nadu, the Linga is often adorned with elaborate kavacham (armor) and flower garlands; arati is grand.
- •In Maharashtra, home Lingas are often made of mercury (Parad) or stone; Monday fasting (Somvar Vrat) is widespread.
- •In Bengal, Shiva is worshipped as Linga and also as anthropomorphic forms; night-long jagarans on Shivaratri are common.
- •In tribal traditions, natural stones, anthills, or trees serve as self-manifested Lingas with minimal ritual.
