Verse 1

अथातो भक्तिसूत्राणि व्यासप्रोक्तानि ज्ञानिनः । अत्र चित्तशुद्धिर्भक्तिश्च ज्ञानं चेति त्रिधा मतम् ॥
Transliteration
Athāto bhaktisūtrāṇi vyāsaproktaāni jñāninaḥ. Atra cittaśuddhirbhaktiśca jñānaṃ ceti tridhā matam.
Meaning / Translation
Now, the Bhakti Sutras, as spoken by Vyasa, are to be explained. Here, the opinion is threefold: purification of the mind, devotion, and knowledge.
Verse 2

नरकान्नरकेभ्यः परं न किञ्चित्सदा ह्यनन्ते परमात्मनि । वासुदेवेऽक्षरे सच्चिदानंदविग्रहे भक्तिरेव च ॥
Transliteration
Narakān narakēbhyaḥ paraṁ na kiñcitsadā hyanantē paramātmani. Vāsudēvē'kṣarē saccidānandavigrahē bhaktirēva ca.
Meaning / Translation
There is nothing higher than the infinite Supreme Self, the imperishable Vasudeva, who is existence, consciousness, and bliss. And devotion to Him is the only means.
Verse 3

द्वारा द्वारेषु सर्वेषु देहेऽस्मिन् प्रविष्टो वासुदेवः । तस्य द्वारतः प्रेम्णा भक्तिर्भवति सा गतिः ॥
Transliteration
Dvārā dvārēṣu sarvēṣu dēhē'smiṁ pravīṣṭō vāsudēvaḥ. Tasya dvārataḥ prēmṇā bhaktirbhavati sā gatiḥ.
Meaning / Translation
Vasudeva has entered this body through all the gates (senses). Devotion, which is the path to Him, arises from love for Him.
Verse 4

अन्तःकरणशुद्धिर्भक्तिरित्यभिधीयते । तामाहुराचार्या ह्यात्मसाक्षात्कारलक्षणम् ॥
Transliteration
Antaḥkaraṇaśuddhirbhaktirityabhidhīyatē. Tāmāhuraācāryā hyātmasākṣātkāralakṣaṇam.
Meaning / Translation
The purification of the heart is called devotion. The teachers say that it is the characteristic of self-realization.
Verse 5

नान्यत्तः पदमश्नीयाद् यस्मान्न भयमभ्युपैति । सा प्रेमसिद्धिरित्युक्ता हृदि यस्य वासुदेवः ॥
Transliteration
Nānyattaha padamaśnīyād yasmānnā bhayamabhyupaiti. Sā prēmasiddhirityuktā hṛdi yasya vāsudēvaḥ.
Meaning / Translation
One who has attained the state of love, in whose heart Vasudeva resides, does not attain any other state, and fear does not approach him.
