The 18 sacred steps represent the virtues and obstacles a devotee must master. Sabarimala's message of self-control, equality and surrender resonates with millions each year.

Sabarimala sits amid dense forest in the Periyar Tiger Reserve, and pilgrims — traditionally clad in black or blue and addressing one another as 'Swami' — climb the sacred 18 steps (Pathinettam Padi) to reach the sanctum. Before the journey, devotees observe 41 days of strict vratham: celibacy, simple food, no footwear and constant remembrance of Ayyappa. The season culminates in the Makaravilakku, when a celestial light (Makara Jyothi) is sighted on the far hills on Makara Sankranti (around January 14), witnessed by vast crowds. The pilgrimage's discipline and equality — devotees leave behind distinctions of wealth and status — give it a profound spiritual character.
