Attukal Bhagavathy is worshipped as the fierce yet motherly goddess who fulfils the prayers of her devotees, especially women. The Pongala festival expresses a deeply personal, collective devotion in which every woman becomes a priestess offering directly to the Mother. The temple embodies the strong tradition of Devi worship in Kerala.
The Attukal Bhagavathy temple, dedicated to the goddess as Bhadrakali (identified with Kannaki of the Tamil epic Silappadikaram), is one of Kerala's most beloved Devi shrines. It is famed above all for the Attukal Pongala, during which millions of women fill the streets of the city for kilometres around, cooking a sweet offering (pongala) of rice and jaggery in earthen pots over open fires to please the goddess — a congregation recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the largest of women anywhere. The temple's gopuram and wooden sculptures depicting the Kannaki legend and the Devi Mahatmyam are richly detailed.
