Jyotirlinga

घूमने का सर्वोत्तम समय

August to February, when the forest is green and the weather cool; the monsoon makes the Ghats lush but slippery. Mahashivratri is the main festival.

महत्व

Bhimashankar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and, according to the Shiva Purana, marks the spot where Shiva vanquished the demon Tripurasura (locally, Bhima). The sweat that poured from Shiva after the fierce battle is said to have formed the Bhima river that originates here. The temple thus symbolises the triumph of divine power over evil and the life-giving grace that follows. For Shaivites of the Deccan, it is among the most cherished pilgrimage destinations.

परिचय

Bhimashankar sits in the lush Western Ghats, surrounded by the dense forest of the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary — home to the rare giant squirrel (shekru), Maharashtra's state animal. The temple is built in the Nagara and Hemadpanthi styles, with additions credited to the 18th-century statesman Nana Phadnavis, and its blackstone spire rises amid mist and birdsong. From the sanctum flows the Bhima river, which winds across the Deccan to join the Krishna. Popular with both pilgrims and trekkers, Bhimashankar offers a rare blend of spiritual retreat and Himalayan-style natural beauty within reach of Pune and Mumbai.
