महत्व

Srisailam is one of the very few temples honoured as both a Jyotirlinga (of Shiva) and a Shakti Peetha (of Devi), a rare confluence of the two great streams of Hindu worship. The Shiva Purana narrates that Shiva and Parvati came to this mountain to console themselves after their son Kartikeya retired here in a huff, and so Shiva manifested as Mallikarjuna. Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have composed the Shivananda Lahari at this very site. For devotees, worship here is said to fulfil desires and bestow liberation, making it one of the four most important Shaivite kshetras of the south.

परिचय

Perched on the Srisailam plateau in the Nallamala Hills, the Mallikarjuna temple is one of the oldest and most revered Shaivite centres of South India, with inscriptions and additions spanning the Satavahana, Vijayanagara and later dynasties. The sprawling fortified complex is famed for its intricately carved stone walls (prakaras) depicting scenes from the Puranas and epics. Here Shiva is worshipped as Mallikarjuna and Parvati as Bhramaramba, and the twin shrines make it a dual pilgrimage site of immense power. Surrounded by tiger reserve forests and overlooking the Krishna River's Srisailam dam, the temple combines spiritual intensity with striking natural beauty.
