Dagadusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple

Dagadusheth Ganapati is revered as a powerful bestower of blessings, wisdom and the removal of obstacles, and is one of the most famous Ganesha shrines in India. Its origin story of transforming personal loss into service and devotion resonates deeply with worshippers. The temple's Ganeshotsav is a centrepiece of Pune's cultural and religious life. Devotees flock here throughout the year, and especially during Ganesh Chaturthi and Angarki Chaturthi.

The temple was founded by the sweet-maker (halwai) Dagadusheth Gadve and his wife after they lost their son to an epidemic, channelling their grief into devotion to Ganesha. The magnificent central idol, modelled on the Ashtavinayak deity of Morgaon, is decked with gold ornaments and jewellery worth crores, its benevolent face drawing devotees from all walks of life — including many celebrities. The temple's Ganesh Chaturthi festivities, with their grand decorations and the immense immersion procession through Pune, are legendary. It stands as a symbol of the city's deep devotion to the elephant-headed lord.
