The temple was founded by the sweet-maker (halwai) Dagadusheth Gadve and his wife after they lost their son to an epidemic, channelling their grief into devotion to Ganesha. The magnificent central idol, modelled on the Ashtavinayak deity of Morgaon, is decked with gold ornaments and jewellery worth crores, its benevolent face drawing devotees from all walks of life — including many celebrities. The temple's Ganesh Chaturthi festivities, with their grand decorations and the immense immersion procession through Pune, are legendary.
