परिचय

Dharmasthala, the 'abode of dharma (righteousness)', is one of the most unusual and admired temples in India. The principal deity, Manjunatha (Shiva), is worshipped by Madhva (Vaishnava) Brahmin priests, while the temple is administered by the Heggade family of the Jain Bunt community, and Hindu guardian daivas (Dharma Daivas) are also honoured — a living harmony of three traditions. The complex includes a majestic 39-foot monolithic statue of the Jain saint Bahubali at nearby Ratnagiri. Renowned for its ideals of charity, justice and truth, Dharmasthala runs a free Anna Daana (meal service) feeding tens of thousands of pilgrims every day.
