Kukke Subramanya is among the most important shrines of Lord Subramanya, the god of valour and the commander of the divine armies, and the foremost destination for serpent-related worship and remedies. The strong association with the Nagas reflects the ancient Hindu reverence for serpents as guardians of fertility and cosmic energy. Its setting in the sacred Western Ghats adds to its spiritual power. Shashti and the Champa Shashti festival draw large crowds.

Nestled at the foot of the forested Kumara Parvata in the Western Ghats, beside the Kumaradhara river, the Kukke Subramanya temple is dedicated to Lord Subramanya (Murugan/Kartikeya), worshipped here in close association with the serpent king Vasuki. Devotees come in large numbers to perform Sarpa Samskara, Ashlesha Bali and Naga Prathishta rituals to remove the effects of Sarpa Dosha (afflictions related to serpents in one's horoscope). Pilgrims pass beneath the Garuda pillar, believed to shield them from the venom of Vasuki who is said to reside within. The temple is also the starting point of a popular trek up the Kumara Parvata.
