Horanadu Annapoorneshwari Temple

Annapoorneshwari embodies the principle that the Divine Mother sustains all life through food, and worship here is believed to guarantee that a devotee's household will never want for nourishment. The temple's ceaseless annadana (free feeding) is devotion in its most tangible form. It is one of the important Devi shrines of coastal and hill Karnataka.

The Adi Shakthyathmaka Sri Annapoorneshwari temple at Horanadu lies deep in the forested hills of Chikkamagaluru district on the banks of the Bhadra river. The presiding goddess, Annapoorneshwari, is the divine mother who nourishes all beings, depicted standing on a golden pedestal holding a vessel of food and a ladle. In keeping with her nature, the temple famously provides free meals and lodging to every visitor, day and night — no pilgrim goes hungry. The tranquil setting amid coffee estates and rainforest, and the belief that the goddess ensures one never lacks food, make Horanadu a cherished pilgrimage of the Malnad region.
