As a manifestation of Shiva's fierce, time-devouring aspect (Kaal), he removes fear, sin and negativity. The temple is a vital part of the sacred geography of Kashi.

Kaal Bhairav is one of the most atmospheric and authentic shrines of Varanasi, its deity a formidable form of Shiva mounted on a dog, adorned with silver and marigold. Devotees receive a black protective thread (kala dhaga) as a blessing, and — uniquely among Hindu temples — the deity is traditionally offered liquor as prasad. As the guardian of Kashi, Bhairav is believed to oversee the city and its dharma, dispensing justice to sinners.
