Best Time to Visit
October to March for pleasant weather; Hanuman Jayanti and the Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh (usually April) are highlights.
Sankat Mochan — literally the remover of troubles and dangers — is revered as a place where Hanuman's grace relieves devotees of hardship, illness and fear. Its founding by Tulsidas ties it to one of the greatest saints of the Rama tradition. Tuesdays and Saturdays draw especially large crowds seeking the deity's blessings. The annual music festival reflects the belief that devotion expressed through art pleases the Lord.
Sankat Mochan is believed to have been established by Goswami Tulsidas, author of the Ramcharitmanas, at the very spot where he is said to have had a vision of Lord Hanuman. Set amid trees near the Assi river, the temple is often full of playful monkeys fed by devotees, and the air rings with recitations of the Hanuman Chalisa. Each year it hosts the Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh, one of India's most prestigious classical music festivals, where legendary artists perform through the night as an offering to Hanuman. The temple embodies the warm, living devotion of Kashi.
