महत्व

Mahakaleshwar is the presiding deity of Ujjain, revered as the lord of Kaal (time) and the protector of the city. As a Jyotirlinga, it is one of the twelve holiest abodes of Shiva, and Ujjain's association with the Kumbh Mela (held on the Shipra) magnifies its sanctity further. The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti, performed with ash, symbolises the truth that all worldly things ultimately return to ash and only the eternal Shiva remains. Devotees believe that worship of Mahakaleshwar frees one from the fear of untimely death and grants moksha.

परिचय

Mahakaleshwar, 'the Great Lord of Time', rises beside the sacred Rudra Sagar lake in Ujjain, one of Hinduism's seven holiest cities. The temple's five levels include the underground sanctum where the swayambhu (self-born) lingam is enshrined, radiating a powerful, almost primal energy. Its most famous ritual is the daily Bhasma Aarti performed before dawn, in which the lingam is bathed with sacred ash — a rite performed at no other temple and one that draws devotees from across the world. The recently developed Mahakal Lok corridor has transformed the precinct with grand gateways, murals and statues narrating the legends of Shiva. As Ujjain's guardian deity, Mahakaleshwar is believed to rule over time and death itself.
