Ujjain is counted among the Shakti Peethas, marking where the elbow (kurpar) of Sati fell; the Shakti is worshipped as Mangal Chandika / Harsiddhi and the Bhairava is Kaal Bhairav. Together with the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, it makes Ujjain a rare city sacred to both Shiva and Devi. The lighting of the lamp towers during Navratri is one of central India's most memorable sights.
The Harsiddhi (Harasiddhi) temple stands on the banks of the Rudra Sagar lake in Ujjain, close to the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. Within the sanctum the goddess Annapurna is depicted in deep vermilion, flanked by images of Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. The temple's most spectacular feature is its two great stone deep-stambhas (lamp towers), each studded with hundreds of oil lamps that are lit to breathtaking effect during Navratri. Harsiddhi was a favoured deity of the legendary King Vikramaditya of Ujjain.
