Set on the Kanduka Hill jutting into the Arabian Sea, the Murudeshwar temple complex — developed in modern times by industrialist R.N. Shetty — is dominated by a colossal seated statue of Lord Shiva that gleams over the coastline. Its 20-storey Raja Gopura, among the tallest temple towers in India, has a lift carrying visitors up for breathtaking views of the sea, the statue and the shore. Beneath the grandeur lies an ancient shrine associated with the legend of the Atma Linga. The dramatic coastal setting makes Murudeshwar one of the most photographed temples in South India.
