The town is one of the seven important Mukti Sthalas of the region and a revered site for performing ancestral rites (pind daan), earning it the title 'Dakshin Kashi'. The legend of the Atma Lingam links Gokarna to the great mythology of Shiva and Ravana. Mahashivratri here is celebrated with a grand car festival and huge crowds.

About

The Mahabaleshwar temple at Gokarna, built in the classic Dravidian style, houses the Pranalingam or Atma Lingam of Shiva, considered one of the most powerful lingams in existence. Legend tells that Ravana obtained the Atma Lingam from Shiva but was tricked by Ganesha into setting it on the ground at Gokarna, where it became permanently fixed — and Ravana's attempts to uproot it only distorted its shape. Uniquely, devotees are permitted to touch the lingam during worship. Set where the Western Ghats meet the Arabian Sea, Gokarna combines profound sanctity with beautiful beaches, and pilgrims bathe in the sea before darshan.
