Mookambika is one of the most important goddess temples of South India, revered as the bestower of knowledge, wealth and spiritual power in her threefold form. Its association with Adi Shankaracharya and the Sri Chakra ties it to the profound Sri Vidya tradition. The presence of both the goddess and a Jyotirlinga makes it a rare dual pilgrimage. Its serene Western Ghats setting deepens its meditative appeal.

परिचय

The Kollur Mookambika temple, set beside the Souparnika river amid the verdant Kodachadri hills, honours the goddess Mookambika, revered as a combined form of Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati (the Tridevi). According to tradition, Adi Shankaracharya meditated on Kodachadri, had a vision of the goddess, and installed the Sri Chakra before the deity here. Uniquely, the sanctum contains a Jyotirlinga (Kola Shankara) alongside the goddess, making it both a Shakti and a Shiva shrine. The temple is especially favoured for the Vidyarambham and Aksharabhyasam rites, in which children are initiated into learning.
