Kheer Bhawani is the foremost shrine of the Kashmiri Pandits and a poignant symbol of their heritage, faith and resilience. The colour-changing spring is revered as a mystical link between the goddess and the fate of Kashmir. The tradition of offering only vegetarian kheer reflects the sattvic, benevolent character of the deity. The annual mela is one of the most moving gatherings of a displaced community returning to its sacred roots.
Kheer Bhawani, dedicated to the goddess Ragnya Devi (Maharagya), stands at Tulmul in Ganderbal district, set over a sacred hexagonal spring amid old chinar trees. The water of the spring is said to change colour, and a darkening towards black is traditionally taken as an ill omen for the valley. In keeping with the goddess's gentle nature, devotees offer kheer (sweet milk-rice pudding), giving the temple its popular name. The annual Jyeshtha Ashtami mela is a deeply emotional homecoming for the Kashmiri Pandit community, many of whom live in exile.
