Saraswati / Sharada is the eighteenth and final Shakti Peetha of the Ashtadasha stotram, marking where the right hand of Sati fell. As the seat of the goddess of learning and the heart of the Sharada tradition of scholarship, it holds unique cultural as well as spiritual significance for Kashmiri Hindus and for all who honour Saraswati. It completes the circuit of the eighteen Maha Peethas.
परिचय
Sharada Peeth, devoted to Saraswati as the goddess Sharada, was one of the foremost temples and universities of ancient India — so revered that Kashmir itself was called 'Sharada Desha' and its script named Sharada. The stotram closes with 'Kashmire tu Saraswati', placing it as the eighteenth of the Maha Peethas. The now-ruined stone temple stands on the banks of the Kishanganga (Neelam) river; it lies in the Neelam Valley in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and access for pilgrims from India has been extremely limited. It remains a poignant symbol of Kashmir's ancient scholarly and spiritual glory. (Situated in present-day PoK, outside Indian administration.)
