Amarnath Temple

Amarnath is among the most sacred abodes of Shiva, for legend holds that it was in this very cave that the Lord narrated the secret of immortality (Amar Katha) to Parvati. The self-forming ice lingam is revered as a living miracle, a natural manifestation of the divine. The demanding yatra is seen as a test of faith and endurance that purifies the soul. It is one of the great pilgrimages of the Hindu world.

The Amarnath cave lies high in the Kashmir Himalayas, reached only by an arduous trek of several days from Pahalgam or the steeper route from Baltal. Inside, a stalagmite of ice forms each year into a lingam that grows and diminishes with the lunar cycle, worshipped as Lord Shiva himself, alongside smaller ice formations revered as Parvati and Ganesha. The annual Amarnath Yatra, held during Shravan (roughly June–August), draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who brave altitude, cold and rugged terrain in an act of intense devotion. The journey through stark, majestic mountains is regarded as a profound spiritual undertaking.
