Morgaon Ashtavinayak Temple

Morgaon is the pre-eminent temple of the Ashtavinayak circuit, the eight most sacred Ganesha shrines that devotees aspire to visit together. As the seat of Mayureshwar, it holds special importance for the removal of obstacles and the granting of wisdom and success. The Ashtavinayak Yatra is one of the most cherished pilgrimages for Ganesha devotees across Maharashtra and beyond. Ganesh Chaturthi and Ganesh Jayanti are celebrated here with great devotion.

Morgaon, whose name derives from mor (peacock), is both the starting and concluding point of the revered Ashtavinayak pilgrimage — a circuit of eight ancient, naturally-formed (swayambhu) Ganesha shrines across Maharashtra. The fortress-like temple, with its stone walls and minarets, enshrines the deity Mayureshwar (Moreshwar), depicted riding a peacock. According to legend, Ganesha slew the demon Sindhu here, and the site is considered among the most spiritually potent for Ganesha worship. Pilgrims traditionally begin and end the eight-temple yatra at this shrine.
