Nageshwar is counted among the twelve Jyotirlingas and, per the Shiva Purana, marks where Shiva rescued a devotee named Supriya and destroyed the serpent-demon Daruka, thereafter residing here as 'Nagesha', the protector against poison and negativity. Its proximity to Dwarka, one of the Char Dham and Sapta Puri, adds to its pilgrim significance. Devotees believe worship here shields them from harm and grants freedom from worldly poisons.
Located between Dwarka and the island of Bet Dwarka, Nageshwar is dominated by a colossal, serene statue of a meditating Shiva that has become a landmark of the region. The underground sanctum enshrines the Jyotirlinga, and the temple's peaceful setting near the Arabian Sea complements a pilgrimage to Krishna's Dwarka nearby. Well-maintained and easily accessible, it is one of the most visited shrines in Gujarat, often combined with the Dwarkadhish and Somnath pilgrimages. The blend of a modern colossus with an ancient lingam gives Nageshwar a distinctive character among the Jyotirlingas.
