Dwarka is one of the four Char Dham and one of the seven Sapta Puri cities that bestow liberation. As the legendary capital of Lord Krishna, it holds a supreme place in Vaishnava devotion, linking the Mahabharata to living worship. Janmashtami here is celebrated with immense joy. Darshan of Dwarkadhish is believed to grant great spiritual merit.
The Jagat Mandir of Dwarkadhish rises about 78 metres on 72 intricately carved pillars beside the confluence of the Gomti and the Arabian Sea. Its huge flag, bearing the sun and moon, is changed five times a day in a ceremony devotees consider a great blessing to sponsor. Legend attributes the original shrine to Krishna's great-grandson Vajranabha, and the nearby Bet Dwarka island is revered as the Lord's residence with his family and friend Sudama. The temple is a cornerstone of Krishna devotion and of Gujarat's spiritual landscape.
