Significance

Dwarka is one of the four Char Dham established by Adi Shankaracharya and one of the Sapta Puri, the seven cities that grant liberation. As the legendary capital of Lord Krishna's earthly reign, it is among the most sacred Vaishnava destinations. Pilgrims believe darshan of Dwarkadhish, the 'King of Dwarka', bestows great merit and blessings. The temple links the epics of the Mahabharata to living devotion.

About

Rising five storeys high on the banks of the Gomti where it meets the Arabian Sea, the Dwarkadhish (Jagat Mandir) temple is supported by 72 carved pillars and crowned by a towering spire. Its enormous flag (dhwaja), bearing the sun and moon, is ceremonially changed five times a day — a ritual devotees vie to sponsor. The city of Dwarka is steeped in the legend of Krishna's golden kingdom, and archaeological finds of submerged structures offshore have fascinated researchers. Nearby Bet Dwarka island is revered as the site of Krishna's residence with his family.
