Jyotirlinga

घूमने का सर्वोत्तम समय

October to March. The monsoon (July–September) makes the Brahmagiri hills lush; Mahashivratri and the Kumbh Mela years see the largest gatherings.

महत्व

Trimbakeshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and marks the sacred origin of the Godavari, India's second longest river. According to the Shiva Purana, the sage Gautama's penance brought both the river and Shiva to reside here. The three-faced lingam symbolising Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva makes it theologically unique among the Jyotirlingas. Every twelve years the Simhastha Kumbh Mela at Nashik–Trimbak draws millions to bathe in the Godavari's waters here.

परिचय

Nestled at the foot of the Brahmagiri hills, from which the Godavari — the 'Ganga of the South' — is born, Trimbakeshwar is a magnificent black-stone temple rebuilt in the 18th century by the Peshwa Balaji Bajirao (Nanasaheb). Its exquisitely carved Nagara-style spire and finely sculpted mandapas make it one of the architectural gems of Maharashtra. Uniquely, the lingam here is not a smooth stone but a natural formation with three tiny faces representing the Hindu trinity, kept covered by a jewelled crown. The temple is also the centre of the important Narayan Nagbali and Tripindi rituals, drawing pilgrims from across India.
