Saptashrungi is honoured as one of the three and a half Shakti Peethas of Maharashtra (an ardha or half peetha), where the Mother is believed to dwell in her most accessible form. As Mahishasuramardini she embodies the triumph of divine power over evil. Chaitra and Ashwin Navratris draw vast throngs of devotees to the hill.
परिचय
Saptashrungi ('seven peaks') Gad is a dramatic hill fort where the goddess is worshipped in a natural rock face amid the Sahyadri ranges. The eighteen-armed image of the Devi, self-manifested in the rock and bearing weapons given by the gods, gazes out over deep valleys. Pilgrims once climbed hundreds of steps carved into the cliff; a funicular railway now eases the ascent. The goddess is regarded as a form of Mahishasuramardini, and the site is closely associated with the legend of the demon Mahishasura, slain nearby. It is the kuldevi of a great many families across Maharashtra.
