महत्व

The Golden Temple is the spiritual and temporal heart of the Sikh faith, home to the Akal Takht and the eternal Guru, the Guru Granth Sahib. Its four open doors and its langar proclaim the core Sikh teachings of equality, humility and service to all regardless of religion or caste. The sight of the golden sanctum reflected in the sacred waters is one of the most moving spiritual experiences in India. It is revered by Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike as a symbol of devotion and human brotherhood.

परिचय

Harmandir Sahib ('Abode of God') was founded by Guru Arjan Dev, who installed the Adi Granth here in 1604; its shimmering gold plating was later gifted by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The temple sits at the centre of a large pool of nectar (Amrit Sarovar) and is entered by a causeway, with doors open on all four sides symbolising openness to all humanity. Within, the Guru Granth Sahib is recited continuously to the accompaniment of soul-stirring kirtan. The adjoining langar serves free vegetarian meals to well over 100,000 people every day, embodying the Sikh ideals of equality and selfless service (seva).
