Jalandhar is counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas, marking where the left breast of Sati fell; the Shakti is Tripurmalini and the Bhairava is Bhishan. As a rare surviving ancient Devi shrine of the region, it is a cornerstone of Shakta worship in Punjab. Navratri here is celebrated with great fervour and grand jagrans.
The Devi Talab Mandir is one of the oldest and most important temples of Punjab, centred on a large, centuries-old tank from which it takes its name. The presiding goddess is Tripurmalini, a form of Durga. The complex has been expanded and beautified over the years and now includes a replica of the Amarnath cave and a model of the twelve Jyotirlingas. It is the spiritual heart of Jalandhar, drawing vast crowds during Navratri and the Dussehra festivities.
