Tuesdays and Saturdays, sacred to Hanuman, are especially auspicious. The temple is a cornerstone of Hanuman worship in the Shekhawati region.
The Salasar Balaji temple in Churu district enshrines a swayambhu (self-manifested) image of Lord Hanuman, said to have been discovered by a farmer ploughing his field in Asota in the 18th century and installed at Salasar in 1754. Unusually, the deity is depicted with a beard and moustache (dadhi-moochh), giving it a distinctive appearance found in few other Hanuman temples. The gold- and silver-adorned sanctum, the constant chanting of 'Balaji', and the offering of sweets and flags create an atmosphere of intense devotion. Great fairs on Chaitra and Ashwin Purnima swell the town with pilgrims.
