Brahma Temple Pushkar

This is among the only prominent temples of Brahma the creator, whose worship is otherwise extremely rare due to a mythological curse. Legend holds that Brahma performed a great yajna at Pushkar, and the lake arose where a lotus (pushpa) fell from his hand. Bathing in the Pushkar sarovar and worshipping Brahma is considered highly meritorious, especially on Kartik Purnima. Pushkar is counted among the holiest tirthas of India.

The Brahma temple, with its distinctive red spire and marble-and-stone structure, stands close to the holy Pushkar Lake, one of the most sacred water bodies in Hinduism. Its sanctum houses a four-faced (chaturmukhi) image of Brahma, and its silver-coin-studded floor bears the memorials of devotees. Since Brahma is almost never worshipped in temple form, this shrine holds a rare and special status. Around Kartik Purnima, the town hosts the world-famous Pushkar Fair, when pilgrims bathe in the lake and a vast camel-and-cattle market fills the desert with colour.
