Govind Dev Ji is venerated as the ishta-devata (chosen deity) of the erstwhile Jaipur royal family and the guardian of the city, with the rulers governing in his name. The idol is considered one of the most authentic images of Krishna, linked to the tradition of the six Goswamis of Vrindavan. Its seven daily darshans allow devotees intimate communion with the Lord through the day. Janmashtami here is celebrated with grand splendour.

परिचय

The temple enshrines Govind Dev Ji, a cherished form of Krishna whose idol was brought from Vrindavan to Jaipur by Sawai Jai Singh II in the 18th century to protect it during troubled times. Uniquely open and airy, the temple's sanctum was so positioned that the Maharaja could behold the deity each morning from his palace, ruling as Govind Dev's earthly regent. Through the day the deity is offered seven jhankis (glimpse-darshans), each with a change of dress, ornaments and bhog, and the temple resounds with kirtan and the ringing of bells. It sits amid the Jai Niwas gardens between the City Palace and Jantar Mantar.
