Tiruchendur is the second of the six Arupadaiveedu abodes of Lord Murugan and the site of his great victory over evil, symbolising the triumph of divine light over darkness. Its unique seaside setting adds to its sanctity, as pilgrims combine sacred sea-bathing with worship. Skanda Shashti, commemorating the defeat of Surapadman, is celebrated here with immense grandeur. It is one of the most revered Murugan shrines in Tamil Nadu.
The Tiruchendur Murugan temple is a majestic seaside shrine, its towering gopuram rising against the backdrop of the ocean in a setting unlike any other Murugan temple. According to tradition, it was here that Lord Murugan, leading the divine army, prepared for and won his climactic battle against the demon Surapadman, restoring cosmic order. Pilgrims bathe in the sea and at the temple's sacred wells before darshan. The temple's rock-cut shrines and its dramatic coastal location make it one of the most striking of the Arupadaiveedu.
