Significance

Rameswaram is unique in uniting Vaishnava and Shaivite traditions: it is one of the four Char Dham shrines and a Jyotirlinga, said to have been consecrated by Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, in worship of Shiva. Completing the pilgrimage of Kashi and Rameswaram together — carrying Ganga water to bathe the lingam here — is considered the summit of Hindu pilgrimage. Bathing in the 22 theerthams is believed to wash away all sins. It is one of the holiest sites in South India.

About

Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameswaram is a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture, its third corridor stretching about 1,220 metres and lined with over a thousand intricately carved granite pillars — a sight unmatched in the Hindu world. The complex contains 22 sacred wells (theerthams), each with distinct waters, in which pilgrims bathe in sequence as an act of purification before darshan. According to tradition, Lord Rama himself installed the lingam here to atone for the killing of Ravana, making the site a bridge between the Ramayana and Shaivite worship. Situated at the tip of the Pamban island facing Sri Lanka, Rameswaram carries a powerful sense of being at the very edge of sacred Bharat.

Part of the Char Dham

The Char Dham (Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri and Rameswaram) are the four sacred abodes at the cardinal corners of India that every Hindu aspires to visit once in a lifetime. This temple is one of the 5 sacred sites of the Char Dham.
