October to March for pleasant weather; Navratri is the principal festival, and the sunrise/sunset views are unmissable.
Kanyakumari is revered as a Shakti Peetha, where the back (or spine) of Sati is said to have fallen, and as one of the holiest points of the sacred geography of Bharat — the land's southern sentinel. The virgin goddess embodies concentrated spiritual power and penance. The nearby Vivekananda Rock Memorial, where Swami Vivekananda meditated, adds to the site's spiritual and national significance.
The Bhagavathy Amman temple stands at the very foot of the Indian peninsula in Kanyakumari, where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meet. The goddess, worshipped as Kanya Kumari — the eternal virgin form of Parvati/Devi — is enshrined facing the eastern sea, holding a rosary, her image famous for a sparkling diamond nose-ring that legend says once guided ships. According to tradition she performed penance here to win Shiva's hand and, in her ever-youthful vigil, subdued the demon Banasura. Pilgrims bathe in the sacred sangam of the three seas before darshan, and the sunrise and sunset over the ocean here are celebrated across India.
