Founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1897 on the west bank of the Hooghly, Belur Math is the global spiritual centre of the Ramakrishna movement. Its magnificent main temple, dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna, was designed by Vivekananda himself to resemble a temple, mosque, church or gurdwara depending on the angle from which it is viewed — a powerful statement of the harmony of faiths. The tranquil, sprawling campus houses shrines and museums preserving the rooms and relics of Sri Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi (the Holy Mother) and Swami Vivekananda. It is a place of quiet reflection, learning and service.
