Shrinkhala is the third of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas named in the great stotram 'Lankayam Shankari Devi, Kamakshi Kanchika pure…'. It marks where the stomach / girdle (shrinkhala) of Sati fell. Though modest today, its inclusion among the Ashtadasha makes it one of the most exalted seats of the Divine Mother.
Shrinkhala Devi is worshipped as the Maha Shakti Peetha of Pradyumna, traditionally placed at Pandua in the Hooghly region of West Bengal. The 'shrinkhala' — the belly or the linking chain/girdle of Sati — is said to have fallen here, and the goddess is invoked as the one who binds and protects her devotees. The original ancient shrine is among the least prominent of the eighteen today, its exact site debated by scholars, but it retains its place of honour in Adi Shankaracharya's Ashtadasha Shakti Peetha Stotram and is revered wherever the eighteen are recited.
