As the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Mayapur is the holiest site of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, whose heart is loving devotion to Krishna through the chanting of the maha-mantra. It is the spiritual capital of the worldwide Hare Krishna movement. Gaura Purnima, marking Chaitanya's appearance, brings tens of thousands of pilgrims from around the world.
Mayapur, on the banks of the Ganga in Nadia district, is revered as the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the 16th-century saint who spread the congregational chanting of the holy names. It is the global headquarters of ISKCON, established by Srila Prabhupada, and a thriving spiritual township of temples, ashrams and gardens. The centrepiece is the colossal Temple of the Vedic Planetarium, one of the largest temple structures in the world, crowned by a great dome. The samadhi (memorial shrine) of Srila Prabhupada and the Chandrodaya Mandir draw devotees from across the globe, and the town pulses with continuous kirtan.
