It embodies the intense devotion to the Divine Mother that characterises Bengali spirituality. The temple's association with Ramakrishna and Vivekananda gives it importance far beyond the region. परिचय

Built in 1855 by the devout philanthropist Rani Rashmoni, the Dakshineswar temple is a striking nine-spired (nava-ratna) structure dedicated to Bhavatarini, a form of Goddess Kali, and flanked by twelve identical Shiva temples and a Radha-Krishna shrine along the riverfront. It was here that Sri Ramakrishna, one of the greatest saints of modern India, worshipped the Mother and had his profound spiritual realisations, drawing disciples including Swami Vivekananda. His preserved room within the complex is a place of pilgrimage. The temple's riverside setting, especially at dawn and during aarti, is deeply serene and uplifting.
