परिचय

The Laxmi Narayan Temple, popularly called Birla Mandir, was built by industrialist Baldeo Das Birla in the North Indian Nagara style, its tall spires and red-and-cream towers a familiar sight in central Delhi. Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated it in 1939 only after securing the promise that it would be open to Hindus of every caste, making it an early symbol of social reform. Beyond the main shrine to Lakshmi and Narayan, the complex includes shrines to Shiva, Ganesha, Hanuman and Buddha, along with gardens and fountains. It remains a serene and popular place of worship amid the bustle of the capital.
