The temple is a beloved seat of Shakti worship in Delhi, drawing devotees who seek the blessings of the Divine Mother for strength and fulfilment of wishes. Its self-manifested idol gives it the aura of a swayambhu shrine. During both Navratris the temple hosts continuous kirtans, jagrans and huge gatherings of the faithful.
The Jhandewalan temple takes its name from the tall flags (jhande) that once marked the hillock where, legend says, a merchant named Shraddha Ram had a dream directing him to a buried idol of the goddess. Excavation revealed a self-manifested murti and a shivling, around which the temple grew in the 19th century. Today the complex is a landmark of the Karol Bagh–Jhandewalan area, distinguished by its multi-storeyed structure and a giant statue of Hanuman nearby. The sanctum enshrines the Devi in a cave-like setting, and the temple thrums with devotion especially through Navratri.
