As one of the oldest temples in Delhi, it links the capital to the legendary city of Indraprastha of the Mahabharata. Hanuman, the embodiment of strength, devotion and selfless service, is invoked here for courage and protection. The temple's ceaseless Ram naam chanting makes it a rare centre of continuous devotion in the middle of the modern metropolis.
Standing just off Baba Kharak Singh Marg near Connaught Place, the Pracheen (ancient) Hanuman Mandir is counted among the five temples said to have been built by the Pandavas in Indraprastha. The present structure was renovated during the Mughal period, and its spire is uniquely crowned by a crescent-and-star finial. Since 1964 the temple has maintained an unbroken recitation of 'Sri Ram, Jai Ram, Jai Jai Ram' — a continuous chant recognised by the Guinness Book of Records. Tuesdays and Saturdays, sacred to Hanuman, see long queues of devotees, and the surrounding lane bustles with sellers of sindoor, sweets and religious wares.
