The pairing of Gauri (Parvati) and Shankar (Shiva) celebrates the divine union of the Mother and the great God. Mahashivratri and Shravan Mondays fill the temple with devotees offering water and bilva leaves to the ancient lingam.

Located on the bustling Chandni Chowk beside the Gurudwara Sis Ganj, the Gauri Shankar temple was built in the 18th century by a Maratha soldier, Appa Gangadhar, in gratitude for the recovery of his son. The sanctum houses a brown stone lingam believed to be roughly 800 years old, adorned with silver and worshipped as Gauri-Shankar (Parvati and Shiva together). The temple's marble interiors, silver-plated shrine and central location in the walled city make it one of Old Delhi's most visited Shaivite shrines, especially thronged during Mahashivratri and the month of Shravan.
