Nartiang is counted among the Shakti Peethas, marking where the left thigh (vam uru) of Sati fell; the Shakti is Jayanti and the Bhairava is Kramadishwar. As the principal Shakti Peetha of Meghalaya, it is a precious link of classical Shakta devotion in India's northeast. Durga Puja here is a deeply significant regional festival.

परिचय

The Nartiang Durga temple, believed to be around 600 years old, stands in the village of Nartiang in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, once the summer capital of the Jaintia kings. The goddess Jayanti (Jayanteswari) is worshipped here, and unusually the sanctum has no idol — a hole in the ground represents the Devi. The temple blends Bengali priestly traditions with the culture of the Khasi-Jaintia hills, and its worship, once bound up with the region's royal history, continues vibrantly today, reaching its peak during Durga Puja.
