Kamakhya is regarded as the greatest of the 51 Shakti Peethas, marking the spot where the yoni of Goddess Sati is said to have fallen — the source of all creative and feminine power. The annual Ambubachi Mela celebrates the goddess's symbolic menstruation, when the temple closes for three days and reopens amid great festivity, honouring fertility and the life-giving force of the divine mother. It is the supreme destination for practitioners of Tantra and Shakti worship. For devotees, Kamakhya embodies the raw, primal energy (Shakti) that animates the universe.

परिचय

Kamakhya is an ancient and mysterious temple whose distinctive beehive-shaped shikhara and hybrid Nilachal architecture set it apart. Unusually, there is no image of the goddess in the sanctum; instead a natural rock cleft, kept moist by an underground spring, is worshipped as the yoni (creative womb) of the Devi. The temple is the epicentre of Shakta and Tantric traditions, and its priests trace their lineage back centuries. During the monsoon Ambubachi Mela, tens of thousands of sadhus, tantriks and pilgrims gather in one of the largest congregations of mystics in the country.
