The Mithila Peetha is counted among the Shakti Peethas, associated with the falling of the left shoulder (vam skandha) of Sati; the Shakti is worshipped as Uma / Mahadevi and the Bhairava as Mahodar. Its ties to Kalidasa and to the learned tradition of Mithila give it a special cultural resonance. Navratri is the grandest festival.

परिचय

The Uchaith Bhagwati temple near Benipatti in Madhubani district lies in the heart of Mithila, the ancient land of Sita and of great Sanskrit learning. The goddess is worshipped as Ucchaishtha / Mahadevi, and local tradition holds that the poet Kalidasa, once a simple-minded man, was transformed into a great genius by the blessing of the Devi here. Set amid the fields and villages of Mithila, the shrine is a cherished centre of Shakta devotion, thronged during Navratri and the Durga Puja season.
