Jogulamba is the fifth of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas ('Alampure Jogulamba'), marking where the upper teeth of Sati fell. As the presiding goddess of Alampur, she guards the western approach to the great Srisailam kshetra. Her Tantric iconography makes her one of the most striking forms among the eighteen.
The Jogulamba temple stands at Alampur, the 'western gateway of Srisailam', amid the celebrated group of ninth-century Navabrahma temples built by the Badami Chalukyas on the banks of the Tungabhadra. The fierce goddess Jogulamba is depicted seated on a corpse, garlanded with a scorpion, frog and lizard — an intensely Tantric form of the Divine Mother. The original shrine was destroyed in the 14th century and the deity kept safe for centuries before the temple was rebuilt and reconsecrated in 2005. Alampur was later relocated above the Srisailam dam waters, preserving its magnificent temples.
