The Nartiang Durga temple, believed to be around 600 years old, stands in the village of Nartiang in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, once the summer capital of the Jaintia kings. The goddess Jayanti (Jayanteswari) is worshipped here, and unusually the sanctum has no idol — a hole in the ground represents the Devi. The temple blends Bengali priestly traditions with the culture of the Khasi-Jaintia hills, and its worship, once bound up with the region's royal history, continues vibrantly today, reaching its peak during Durga Puja.
The Shakti Peethas are revered shrines marking the places where parts of Goddess Sati's body are believed to have fallen. Each embodies the divine feminine energy (Shakti). This temple is one of the 45 sacred sites of the Shakti Peetha.
