The Cosmic Slumber

तस्मिन् महाभोगपयोः सुप्तोऽसि विष्णुः । तस्मिन् श्रवणविवरतः प्रजायते मधुः कैटभश्च ॥
Transliteration
tasmīn mahābhogapayoḥ supto'si viṣṇuḥ | tasmīn śravaṇavivarataḥ prajāyate madhuḥ kaiṭabhaśca ||
Meaning / Translation
In that great ocean of bliss, Vishnu was in a state of cosmic sleep. From his ear, the demons Madhu and Kaitabha were born.
The Emergence of the Demons

तौ असुरौ ब्रह्मदेवं प्रधर्मयतः । तस्मिन् महामायायाः प्रसादात् विष्णुः प्रसुप्तोऽभवत् ॥
Transliteration
tau asurau brahmadevaṃ pradharmayataḥ | tasmin mahāmāyāyāḥ prasādāt viṣṇuḥ prasupto'bhavat ||
Meaning / Translation
Those two demons threatened Lord Brahma. However, by the grace of the Great Goddess Mahamaya, Vishnu was induced into a deep, trance-like sleep.

नमो देव्यै महामायै नमो नित्याय शाश्वत्यै । नमो योगिनीं देवीं नमस्ते सर्वकारिणीम् ॥
Transliteration
namo devyai mahāmāyai namo nityāya śāśvatyai | namo yoginīṃ devīṃ namaste sarvakāriṇīm ||
Meaning / Translation
Salutations to the Goddess, the Great Mahamaya; salutations to the Eternal and Timeless One. Salutations to the Goddess of Yoga, the one who performs all cosmic functions.

ततः विष्णुः प्रबुद्धः तौ असुरौ प्रहृतवान् । तस्मिन् महाभोगपयोः सुप्तोऽसि विष्णुः ॥
Transliteration
tataḥ viṣṇuḥ prabuddhaḥ tau asurau prahṛtavān | tasmin mahābhogapayoḥ supto'si viṣṇuḥ ||
Meaning / Translation
Then Vishnu awoke and struck down those two demons. In that great ocean of bliss, Vishnu had been sleeping, but through the Goddess's intervention, justice was restored.
